Spatial analysis of malaria incidence in Ethiopia

In a recent article in International Journal of Health Geographics, Asnakew K Yeshiwondim and colleagues publish an interesting paper “Spatial analysis of malaria incidence at the village level in areas with unstable transmission in Ethiopia”.

They examined the spatial and temporal patterns of malaria transmission in East Shoa. They show that malaria incidence varies according to gender and age, with males age 5 and above showing a statistically higher incidence. Significant local clustering of malaria incidence occurs between pairs of villages within 1–10 km distance lags.

Use of Bed nets in Wonago

Gashaw Dagne and Wakgari Deressa. Knowledge and utilization of insecticide treated mosquito nets among freely supplied households in Wonago Woreda, Southern Ethiopia. Ethiop.J.Health Dev. 2008;22(1):34-41

To prevent malaria, the Government of Ethiopia gave out Insecticide Treated Nets (ITNs) to many households in the country. This paper assesses the use ITNs in Wonago Woreda, Southern Ethiopia.

About two-thirds of the households used bed nets to prevent malaria. The use of bed nets was higher in families with more than one bedroom. About one-third of the bed nets had holes or tears in the net. Of these, 40% had seven or more tears.

The authors advise health education to promote the proper use of ITNs.
